Ciao!
This is going to be my first entry regarding a movie. Don’t get me wrong. I love movies. I have been addicted to them since I was a little girl who was dragged by her father to the movie theater to watch Superman. Well, I was not literally dragged, but my father was the one who introduced me to the world of movies. All right, I’m digressing. The point of this whole “enchilada” is that I just saw one of the best movies this year. I never thought I would “gush over” a comic book character in a movie when so many of them have been popping out into the screens of late. But here I am, and yes I am “gushing over” it. I have always been interested in Bruce Wayne’s alter ego. I think he is one of the most interesting heroes because he actually has no innate super powers. This fact makes him more human, which is why I like him better than most comic book heroes. However, when the last movie was sensationalized by Katie Holmes’ seemingly crazy hook up with Tom Cruise, I refused to watch “Batman Begins” on principle, even though I love Christian Bale. And so when I read that Holmes would not be reprising her role, which is understandable because I can’t remember of any love interest of Batman that appeared in more than one movie, I decided to give the latest Batman a chance. And boy was I NOT disappointed! When I bought the ticket, I really didn’t expect much from the movie. I mean, I have watched most of the Batman movies, and although they were entertaining, they were not exactly masterpieces. But boy, critics who don’t appreciate this movie are either blind or mentally unbalanced. Kidding! All right, half kidding.
At first I was afraid that the crowds might be a deterrent for me because I don’t like elbowing people just to get a movie ticket. Luckily, it didn’t have to come to that. So there I was, a movie ticket in one hand and coffee in another, sitting next to a girl who kept exclaiming “Oh my God! I love Heath!” whenever the handsome Aussie pops into the screen. Still, despite the stimuli for several “eye-rolling” incidents, I was thoroughly entertained. The plot was really good, not to mention that the actors did their respective roles more than justice. And even Maggie Gyllenhaal was not so bad. Don’t get me wrong. I like Maggie. It was just that her character was not able to fully develop like Aaron Eckhart’s character did. I know she’s a good actress, but her role did not ask much and so her character was not that “prominent” on the screen. But her character was indeed a powerful factor in the development of Harvey Dent’s character, so her stint in this movie was not altogether expendable. Now, let’s go to the late Heath Ledger. *watery eyes* I believe no one could have portrayed The Joker better than this Aussie. He was great in this movie. I’m sure Matilda would be so proud of her father when she grows up and discover this masterpiece. Moreover, I love the veteran actors Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman who were in the movie. I have always loved these guys’ works, and I find I still haven’t found a single movie of these guys that I didn’t like. Now, let’s go to the beautiful Christian Bale. I like this guy. I first discovered him in “Empire of the Sun” working with John Malkovich, and he was great there. He looked smaller, unkempt, and a little emaciated there; but his performance there as an orphan kid trapped in a war was brilliant. I could still remember how I filled buckets with my tears when I watched that movie. Hahaha! In this movie, he may have been eclipsed by Heath’s performance and oversensationalized untimely demise; still, I believe he was able to do justice to the role. I have always thought he is an excellent actor (I still do!), so I may be a teeny bit biased, but he looked really cool in the Bat suit. No jest. The Batman voice was a little weird but you could just brush it aside and choose not to remember it when he’s not in the Bat suit and talking.
In conclusion, the movie was a great surprise to me. I never thought I would like it, more so that I would obsess about it. Trust me. My friends could attest to the latter part. LOL! So, yes! In my opinion, “The Dark Knight” is a great movie and a great last movie for a great actor. If you want “eye candy” as well as a really good plot, then I highly recommend this movie.
