Today has been quite an adventure for the people of Cebu, Negros, and Ilo-Ilo. I don't exactly know what happened on the streets of the other two places, but here in Cebu, people were in all states of panic and chaos. And I know I should be scared... but I just couldn't help laughing after most of my neighbors started screaming in terror while running towards what they think is "uphill" about an hour after the tremor. Don't get me wrong, I did get scared. I got scared when I felt the main tremor while I was sleepily trying to wake up. I actually went outdoors in my pjs. Hahaha. But when some "psycho" incited panic by screaming that he saw the waters coming towards our sitio and I realized it was just a nasty joke, I couldn't help laughing. I couldn't even go to my tutorial because the streets were jammed. *sigh* I hope she and her family are okay.
On a related note, I snapped some pictures (ehem... proof) of the pandemonium today. Luckily, the panic was already about to abate so the crowd wasn't so scary anymore. Hehe.
Fuente Osmeña... Motorists from Jones Avenue to Capitol (notice that the other lane, which is going towards downtown, is almost empty)
Mango Avenue to Capitol
People on the streets
stores that closed early downtown
And according to local news, Cebu is expected to feel aftershocks for the next few days so people have to stay vigilant. o_O
Just some advice though... when you hear of some coming disaster, there's no use panicking. Try to stay calm and do something useful instead(such as putting on some undies and remembering to wear shoes before going outside). You might not be able to control the fear, but I bet you could still control your actions... somewhat. :P

I could not blame people for panicking since earthquake is not a common occurrence in Cebu. I would have reacted the same way especially what happened last year in Japan and the other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteOther than calamity drills and brushing up one's knowledge on what to do in case of such calamities, people should probably start setting aside a survival kit/bag containing essentials, bottled water and food (crackers).
Hope everything is OK.
Actually, I did panic during the earthquake. Hehehe. It's hard not to when you feel like you can't walk straight. And I had my 4-year old niece with me, too! I just got annoyed when some people insisted the water is rising and proceeded to scream and incite panic even when they know the tsunami alert got lifted. Evil people.
DeleteYeah, I agree. A survival kit in hand is a great idea, Amor... especially since we're still experiencing aftershocks. :S
And thanks for the concern, Amor. But as far as I know, Cebu has no casualties. All casualties were in Negros. I hope my relatives there are okay. :(
